The Importance of Hormone Balance
Most women see a significant drop in estrogen and testosterone during menopause, while many men may experience a similar phenomenon relating to testosterone, known as andropause or more commonly as Low T (low testosterone). Hormonal imbalances occur when there is too much or too little of a hormone in the bloodstream. Hormones are important for regulating most major bodily processes. Because of their essential role in the body, even the smallest hormonal imbalance can cause side effects throughout the body. Balanced and optimized hormones can have many benefits such as increased energy, decreased brain fog, better sleep, and long-term health benefits such as improved muscle mass, improved lipid and cholesterol profiles, improved cardiovascular health, weight loss, improved bone density, decreased risk for Alzheimer’s disease, and better overall health as we age.
What is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?
As we age, our bodies naturally start to reduce the amount of hormones like testosterone and estrogen they produce. Hormones such as these are incredibly important to how many areas of your body function – such as your brain, heart, bones, reproductive organs, and more. When these hormones are out of balance, people can experience a number of different symptoms. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a method of restoring the balance of your hormones and aiming to relieve these symptoms, using compounded hormones that are identical in structure to those your body naturally produces. That way, your body recognizes and uses these replacement hormones in exactly the same way it would hormones it produces naturally.
What Are the Options for Hormone Replacement?
Hormone replacement can be done through a variety of ways- creams, patches, oral forms, injections, or pellets. Some of these forms are synthetic and others are bioidentical forms. Your provider can help you determine which option would be best for you.
How Are Bioidentical Hormones Different From Synthetic Hormones?
Bioidentical hormones are biochemically the same as the hormones produced by the human body. They are plant-based, natural substances created from yams to precisely match the molecular structure of hormones that can be metabolized by the body, minimizing side effects and making it easier for your body to recognize and use them. Synthetic hormones are artificially formulated and intentionally manufactured to be slightly different from human hormones in order to be patentable, they can have more side effects and need to be converted by the body for you to be able to use them. We like hormone pellets because they are bioidentical, easily administered, provide consistent, steady dosing, and last several months.

Are There Any Side Effects?
Because we use bioidentical hormones, there are very few side effects and are safer than synthetic hormones. Side effects from the hormones may include some hair growth or acne, both of which are very treatable. Mild bruising and/or temporary discomfort at the pellet insertion site may occur.
How Are the Pellets Administered?
A small incision is made in the buttocks area. The pellets are then inserted under the skin through the incision. The incision is closed with steristrips and a pressure dressing is placed over the area. No stitch is required. The procedure takes only a few minutes.
How Long Do the Pellets Last?
Pellets typically last 3-4 months for women and about 6 months for men. Pellet duration varies by individual and their body’s needs. If you are very active, under a lot of stress, or are out in extremely hot weather, your treatment may not last as long. The absorption rate is based on cardiac output.
Is BioTE® Covered by Insurance?
BioTE® bio-identical hormone pellet treatments are not a covered expense on any insurance plans, and we do not submit insurance claims for this service. Some HRAs/HSAs will reimburse you for hormone replacement therapy services. You will need to check with them directly to see if it is a reimbursable service.
